Wake, one of Oakland’s more adventerous and knowledgable beatheads, has put together a rather stunning new EP for the Proximal label entitled Oakland Blackouts. Across four tracks of dark, melancholic atmospheres, the man flexes some serious sound-design muscle, conjuring up incredibly detailed and physical soundscapes with an uncommon sense of depth and density. Furthermore, each tune takes on its own “jazz flavor,” landing the EP somewhere along the lines of a more G-funk Jan Jelenik—which is to say, this EP is really, really dope.
