Let’s be honest, here at Mapzzz, we really don’t know shit about current hip-hop. From what we’ve seen, Oakland has a lively scene (Trill Team 6, On Task Family, and Antwon just to name a few), but we’d be the first to tell you we’re not an authority on the subject by any means. Which brings us to Space Ghost—an Oakland beatsmith who straddles the line between future-music maker and syrupy hip-hop head, and on his latest EP for the aforementioned On Task Family collective/label, he brings us closer than usual to the depths of Oakland hip-hop, filtered through the warmest of textured hazes. Fortunately, Space Ghost leans on the slow and soulful side of beat-informed rap music, offering up two warped tracks whose production is nothing short of ace.
